Atlantis: the lost city

The legend of Atlantis is about a legendary island that disappeared into the sea. Its origin goes back to two accounts by the philosopher Plato, called Timaeus and Critias, in which he described Atlantis with precision. This made the myth known and believed by the society.

According to Plato, Atlantis was born after Poseidon fell in love with a baby named Clito and to protect her, or keep her captive, created three rings of water around the mountain her beloved inhabited. The couple had ten children, for whom the god divided the island into ten respective kingdoms. Favored by Poseidon, Atlantis was abundant in natural resources. There were all kinds of minerals, especially the oricalco, a kind of "mountain copper" that was used for religious purposes and was very important for the Atlanteans.

From this have arisen multiple theories of how Atlantis sank into the sea. Even during the 16th and 17th centuries, expeditions were made in search of it.
